This is a cute Shunkei lacquer cup. Lacquerware is made using transparent lacquer on wood so that the natural wood grain can be seen. Please enjoy this cup for your sake, tea drinking or even ice cream cup. Wooden cups retain heat better and are less likely to get cold or warm. You may feel that the cup is too hot to hold without handles such as ceramic teacups. Wooden vessels do not conduct heat very well, so even if you put a hot drink in it, it will not get hot.

[Production process]

Material: Hokkaido Katsura over 6 cm thick are sun-dried for 7 to 8 years. In addition, after artificial drying, it is left indoors for at least six months to condition the moisture content.

Wood production: Each piece is hollowed out one by one by the hands of a craftsman who has 50 years of experience in the craft. The rounded and bulging shape is a process that requires a certain amount of skill.

Undercoating: Primer paint is applied. Repeat 3 times with urethane paint and then sharpen. At this time, color is added to the wood. By using urethane painting, water will not be absorbed into the wood. If only lacquer is used as a primer, the wood will absorb water and become warped and cracked. Finally, a fourth base coating for lacquer is applied and we let it dry for more than one month.

Lacquering: After drying for more than one month, it is given to a lacquer painter for final polishing. The polishing process improves the adhesion of the lacquer to the surface of the wood. Lacquer craftsman who has more than 30 years of experience applies Shunkei Lacquer by hand.

Finishing: The finished product is dried for around one to two months. This will harden the lacquer and make it stronger. After inspection, it will be cleaned by removing small particles of dust on the surface. Then, the product is packaged.
